Hiking Alone: Trails Out, Trails Home

Hiking Alone: Trails Out, Trails Home

$22.71

In this collection of personal essays, Mary Beath often does follow trails in solitudeboth literally and metaphorically. With the focus of a scientist, the attention to detail of an artist, and the lyrical language of a poet, she recasts a classic American tale: travel from the East westward and remake your life.Beath lived for ten years in New York Citys East Village in the 1980s before she moved to New Mexico. Whether on a solo hike in the San Juan Mountains weighing risk and choice in unexpected encounters, diving in the Sea of Cortez hoping to make peace with traditional biology, or lobbying for wilderness on Capitol Hill, she never fails to engage the reader on multiple levels, within a natural world that includes humans. This book will resonate with anyone who values selfreliance and celebrates the Wests rich and complex landscapes. Whether navigating the fields of Zuni, the halls of Congress, or simply her own ruminations, Beath takes the reader on a journey through the wonders of the West. U.S. Representative Tom Udall, NM I loved trekking with Mary Beath, her sweet song and vision leading the way through both dark and sundrenched vales of soulmaking. Hiking Alone is a generous and reflective book, lovely in language, sharp in observation. Garrett Hongo, author of Volcano: A Memoir of Hawaii Author: Beath, Mary Binding Type: Paperback Number of Pages: 358 Publication Date: 2008/04/01 Language: English Dimensions: 9.02 x 6.48 x 0.94 inches

Hiking is an outdoor activity which consists of walking in natural environments, often on hiking trails. It is such a popular activity that there are numerous hiking organizations worldwide. The health benefits of different types of hiking have been confirmed in studies. The word hiking is understood in all Englishspeaking countries, but there are differences in usage. In the United States and United Kingdom, hiking refers to crosscountry walking of a longer duration than a simple walk and usually over terrain where hiking boots are required. A day hike refers to a hike that can be completed in a single day, often applied to mountain hikes to a lake or summit, but not requiring an overnight camp, in which case the term backpacking is used. Bushwhacking specifically refers to difficult walking through dense forest, undergrowth, or bushes, where forward progress requires pushing vegetation aside. Africa: Hiking, Camping, and Prison

Africa: Hiking, Camping, and Prison

$28.98

One prison, four jails, in three different countries no less, and four years later; having been kicked out from the last three countries I had visited; I found myself heading through Europe to the North Sea. The oil rigs beckoned. Nothing had been planned to end this way. How I got to this point, is the story. I went to Africa because I didnt know what I wanted to do for the rest of my life. I was a recent college graduate taking advantage of my fathers employment. He was a Captain with Pan American Airlines. I had had a job upon graduation with the help of Ken Olenik, who was one of my professors at Aurora College. My intentions were to travel to West Africa, visit a classmate who had joined the Peace Corps, then fly to South Africa. This story may encourage some readers to travel to remote locales, others may find the spiritual aspects curious, and the rest may be entertained and laugh with me. Again, this story relates the experiences of a nave young man who matured to manhood with the help of people he met, along with the circumstances and events that he encountered. At that time, body counts of US soldiers in Vietnam were related each day on the news. The Peace Movement was well on its way, and Jane Fonda was visiting the enemy of the United States. My mother had dreams, my friends had astral visitations, and I had a visitation of my own while in prison. The time in history, places, people, and animals are what make this story interesting. Times have changed, but the escapades were real. Please enjoy, be encouraged to take the first step that may help to determine the rest of your life. Author: Newcomb, Larry T. Binding Type: Paperback Number of Pages: 332 Publication Date: 2007/03/01 Language: English Dimensions: 9.00 x 6.00 x 0.74 inches
